Iām interested in art as a connector. A thing that lets people engage with themselves, others, and the world in a way that cuts through objective reality and touches some deeper, more true part of the emotional self.
A color choice can mean nothing or everything. Or it can mean different things to different people at different times. Meaning is simultaneously inevitable and changeable.
When I paint, I often start by imagining the posture of a figure. Often that body language speaks to some sensation I am experiencing, or sometimes trying to shake off.
By virtue of having a body and a spirit, I understand that these postures and emotions to tap into something universal and deeply personal. We all feel the same sensations. Pain, love, pleasure, anger. An orange tastes the same to you as it does to me. On a fundamental level we want the same thing- to be alive and feel connected.
The creative act is a way of presenting the most vulnerable parts of your internal world to the external world without danger of rejection or repercussion. It creates room around pain, to let wounds breathe, and make room for curiosity.
